The National Hispanic Institute is pleased to announce that it will partner with the University of the South to host its 2022 International CWS program, taking place June 29-July 3.

The International Collegiate World Series, which has traditionally served high-performing Latino/a/x high school students from Central American nations and the Caribbean Islands, as well as from across the U.S., will be part of a planned, expanded lineup of live, on-campus summer programs in 2022 focused on developing potential future leaders for the growing, global Latino/a/x community.

The CWS, considered the capstone program in NHI’s three-year leadership development series for aspiring young leaders, combines a focus on the college application process with an introduction to inquiry-based learning, which NHI alumni use in their decision-making processes as future leaders.

By partnering with the University of the South — also known as “Sewanee” for the Tennessee town where the university is based — NHI has chosen one of the premier higher education institutions in a region becoming increasingly important for Latino/a/x community-building and leadership development.

“We were so pleased to be called by the University of the South’s president, Dr. Reuben E. Brigety Il, last fall to visit about working on a partnership,” said Nicole Nieto, NHI’s Executive Vice President. We are delighted to host NHI’s CWS program on Sewanee’s campus in 2022, a first in the state of Tennessee. This is historic and a true honor.”

“We are beyond excited to begin Sewanee’s relationship with the National Hispanic Institute, which will serve Latinx students for years to come,” said Alan Ramirez, Associate Provost and Dean of Admission and Financial Aid for the University of the South. “Sewanee has a history of developing leaders. The student-centered philosophy and purpose that Sewanee shares with NHI make this relationship all the more meaningful.”

“I want to thank the NHI team and my colleagues in the Office of Admission and Development, and our NHI-Sewanee interns for collaborating to make this partnership a reality,” added Nicky Hamilton, Dr. Brigety’s Chief of Staff, who has been leading this process on behalf of Sewanee.

The University of the South is located on 13,000 acres on Tennessee’s Cumberland Plateau. The campus is a distinctive asset offering an unparalleled outdoor laboratory and boundless recreational opportunities, just 90 miles southeast of Nashville.

“This program will bring students to an inspirational university campus worthy of the in-person immersive learning experience we’ve made the CWS,” said NHI Senior Vice President Julio Cotto. “That will include — in what will be exclusively part of this program at the University of the South, an immersive journey into Southern culture and even Southern cuisine. For NHI, this represents a bold step to the beat of the different drummer we always aim to follow.”

Limited spots are available for current high school juniors who have either had an in-person or digital Great Debate or LDZ experience. Additionally, NHI is making spots available for students who haven’t yet done an NHI program.
